Are You Afraid...Of Natural Deo?!

So, I decided to write about natural deodorant, since it was once a great struggle of mine. I will clarify up front that I do not have a relationship with Schmidt's Naturals. I do not sell, nor get a commission on their products (however, they can feel free to contact me if they wanna talk...) So, this is just my honest opinion and a recommendation based on what I found works for me. If you don't think your deodorant is important, think again!

(Lavender + Sage is my fave, but I decided to try their latest scent. See Below!)

Anyways, here's the real deal! Deodorant, oh deodorant, where for art thou deodorant? Have you ever wondered why the person next to you on the train is overpowering you with their rancid BO? Or had someone whisk by you in a hurry, only to leave behind a putrid, lagging odor...? You probably thought, "man, when is the last time they showered?!" or "Jeez, ever heard of deodorant, buddy?!" But in all reality, the truth may be, they are just amidst switching deodorants.

The body is very complex, and whenever you make a change, like switching from chemical-based products like deodorant to a more natural option, your body will detox from the chemicals that have built up over time. During this process, there will most likely be a fowl odor. The best way to deal with it is to drink alkaline water to hydrate the body more effectively and balance your pH, eat alkaline foods, carry wet wipes with you to cleanse yourself throughout the day, and keep your new deodorant with you so that you can reapply when needed.

This process will not take very long if you adhere to the list suggested above. You can also use essential oils and coconut oil as natural alternatives to deodorant. I tried more than my fair share when seeking the perfect fit. I won't name the ones that didn't work for me, because hey...they may be great for someone else, but what I will say is... I Love Schmidt's! They provide not only the best deodorant that I have ever used, natural or otherwise, but their customer service is also impeccable!

I just got my latest stick of Schmidt's in the mail, and I was so happy to receive it, since I unknowingly had the wrong shipping address attached to my PayPal account. But, it was not a problem at all! I simply contacted Schmidt's via email, made them aware of the issue, provided the correct shipping address, and they took care of everything within moments! I love experiences like this, it feels like the Universe is aligning in my favor! I'm sure you know what I mean if you have ever had customer service issues...

I ordered the Earth + Wood, since I tend to love those more woodsy, patchouli type of androgynous aromas. This natural deodorant is a collaboration with Edens Garden, and carries lovely notes of vetiver, earthy cedarwood, and spicy accents of damiana. Enriched with mineral-derived ingredients: Magnesium and Sodium Bicarbonate, Plant-based powders help absorb wetness without the use of aluminum. This is what helps neutralize odor naturally. I appreciate their 100% Satisfaction Guarantee: World-class customer support, easy returns and exchanges. This deodorant is free of aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens & phthalates; no artificial fragrance. I enjoy it's non-greasy, non-sticky feel and it never gets on my clothes, which use to be a real problem! The best part is it's Certified Vegan + Cruelty-Free !!!

A bit about Schmidt's...

Schmidt's Naturals was born from the vision of natural product developer Jaime Schmidt in 2010 during the Maker Movement. With humble beginnings in a Portland, Oregon kitchen, entrepreneurship brought Schmidt's lifetime passion for innovative body care into focus. Motivated to make products that would benefit her family's health, and knowing that the natural deodorant offerings on the market were falling short of consumer expectations, Jaime made it her mission to change the way people think about deodorant.

Now check this... they even have a Recycling Club with Benefits! Gotta Love It!!! Here's the scoop on that... If you send them five of your empty deodorant jars, they will send you a new one of your choice for FREE! Then Schmidt's will sanitize the jars that you sent in and re-use them... now that's Up-cycling at it's Finest!

So, you may be wondering what the reason is to be so concerned about what type of deodorant you're using, other than the pit stains on your shirts... Your Health, of course! Most deoderants that are commonly used contain ingredients that are very harmful. Unfortunately, these companies do not care about your health, so you have to take the necessary measures and precautions to do so.

What are some of those harmful ingredients? Well, I'm so glad that you asked...

ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM TRICHLOROHYDREX GLY (ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM TRICHLOROHYDREX GLY)

Now say that 3 times fast... J/K!!!

1. Parabens

(methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl)

Parabens are a very common ingredient that is found in everyday cosmetic products and your deodorant as well. You may have seen “paraben free” labels, and it’s a good thing. So why is everyone so down on parabens after it has been used for nearly 70 years? During a study done in 2004, parabens have been linked to breast cancer. They are said to disturb the body’s hormonal balance and to mimic estrogen, as estrogen is said to play a part in breast cancer formation.

Dangers for health: linked to breast cancer.

2.Aluminum compounds

(Aluminum chloralhydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly)

Aluminum compounds within deodorants act as a plug within the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. However, these compounds can be absorbed by your skin. Just as the parabens, these compounds can mimic estrogen, which promotes growth of breast cancer cells.

Dangers for health: linked to breast cancer.

3. Silica

Silica is a known skin irritant, it may also be contaminated with crystalline quartz which is a carcinogen (capable of causing cancer).

Dangers for health: cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity

4. Triclosan

Triclosan is another ingredient that can irritate your skin and cause contact dermatitis. Your body contains good as well as bad bacteria, but triclosan kills both. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide, while the IARC has it listed as a possible carcinogen.

Dangers for health: skin irritation, contact dermatitis, cancer.

5. Talc

IARC, claims that if Talc contains asbestiform fibers, then it is considered a carcinogen. The quantity of asbestiform fibers in deodorants is unclear as it is not regulated in cosmetic products.

Dangers for health: linked to cancer.

6. Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is another common ingredient with health hazards. It may cause delayed allergic reactions, and is considered a neurotoxin, which may cause kidney and liver damage.

Dangers for health: delayed allergic reactions, possible kidney, and liver damage.

7. Steareth-n

The “n” stands for a number. So the label may say, for example, steareth-1. It is actually derived from vegetables, but it is reacted with a known carcinogen, ethylene oxide.

Dangers for health: linked to cancer.

Other ingredients:

Fragrance – skin irritation, harmful to the environment, allergies and organ system toxicity.

Deodorants to Avoid:

Most common deodorants on the shelves like Axe, Secret, Old Spice, Dove, Right Guard typically contain at least one of these ingredients.

Bottom line, get on board with the go-green train and take care of your health! Cheers!
